The Steinhardt Office of Research is pleased to announce two internal funding opportunities available for Spring 2024:

  • Steinhardt Faculty Challenge Grants support the development of promising scholarships and convenings that foster the health, development, and well-being of people and communities around the world, and when relevant, that aid Steinhardt faculty in securing external funding for these groundbreaking projects. Awards are up to $10,000 over one year with applications due April 15, 2024.
  • Statistical Consulting Challenge Grants support projects that can benefit from statistical consultation to improve the competitiveness of planned applications to larger external funding mechanisms. If awarded, Steinhardt faculty will work with colleagues in PRIISM (the Center for Practice and Research at the Intersection of Information, Society, and Methodology) to refine the quantitative aspects of their research design for upcoming proposals. Applications are due April 15, 2024.

The Steinhardt Faculty Challenge Grants provide funding to support the development of promising scholarship and convenings that foster the health, development, and wellbeing of people and communities around the world, and when relevant, that aid Steinhardt faculty in securing external funding and/or awards for these groundbreaking projects. Special consideration will be given to projects drawing from humanistic perspectives. Awards are up to $10,000 over one year (September 1 - August 31) with funding decisions announced in late spring.

Funding Priorities
Proposals that feature the following criteria will receive priority consideration:

  • Interdisciplinary work or collaboration between researchers and community partners.
  • Early career faculty (e.g., receipt of doctorate within the past seven years).
  • Potential for leading to external funding, awards, or social impact.
  • Work that aligns with school and university equity goals.

Eligibility
All full-time Steinhardt faculty (tenure-track, clinical) and other scholars with PI status are eligible to apply. Applicants must not have received Steinhardt Faculty Challenge Grant funding within the two previous years.

The review committee will evaluate proposals by considering the following criteria and may seek comments from other colleagues at the University:

  • Significance of and potential for advancing the relevant field.
  • Clarity of the aim, question, or problem.
  • Experience and potential of the team to conduct the proposed project.
  • Attention to equity in approach, methods, and/or concept.
  • Creativity in approach, methods, and/or concept.
  • Feasibility of the project.
  • Potential for leading to external funding or social impact.
  • Dissemination plans.

Grantee Expectations
Recipients are required to report and present on the outcomes of their funded project, and to participate in Steinhardt research, department, or center-sponsored activities and initiatives relevant to their award.

Applications for 2024 are due April 24, 2024 via InfoReady.

This year, the Steinhardt Office of Research and PRIISM (the Center for Practice and Research at the Intersection of Information, Society, and Methodology) are partnering to offer Statistical Consulting Challenge Grants. This opportunity invites proposals for projects that can benefit from statistical consultation to improve the competitiveness of planned applications to larger external funding mechanisms. The application includes questions about the overarching goal of the project and how statistical analyses could help the researchers address their goal. An advanced knowledge of statistics is not required and statistical guidance will be tailored to projects of various sophistication and in various stages of development.

If awarded, Steinhardt faculty will work with colleagues in PRIISM to refine the quantitative aspects of their research design for upcoming proposals. (Note this opportunity supports statistical consulting for proposals only. Funded research projects require alternative plans.)
