Steinhardt Study Abroad Scholarships

We offer a limited number of competitive, need-based scholarships ranging from $500-$2,000 for participation in Intersession and Summer study abroad programs. Undergraduate and graduate US citizens, permanent residents, and international students are eligible to apply. Scholarship awards are applied in the form of a discount to the student's Bursar bill for the term in which study abroad takes place. 

You should apply concurrent with your study abroad application, so we can review the materials together. Materials will not be reviewed together if your scholarship application is submitted after application round deadline. Include the following documentation in .PDF or .DOC format:

  • Financial need statement – an essay of one page or less that describes your current financial circumstances and explains the gap between your current financial resources and the cost of attending the study abroad program
  • Current resume
  • Copy of FAFSA Student Aid Report (US citizens only) or other financial documentation (international students)

You must meet the following criteria in order to be eligible:

  • Display financial need through the documents requested on the program application
  • Have submitted a FAFSA to your home institution during the current academic year, if a US citizen
  • Are taking three or more credits during the term in which study abroad is planned
  • Display financial need through documentation such as private loans, government loans, or bank statements if an international student or non-student professional

You are not eligible if you:

  • Receive tuition remission from NYU or your home university (this includes employees, spouses, and dependents)
  • Received, during the current academic year, any graduate-level fully funded fellowship or scholarship from NYU (including Steinhardt Fellows, Founders Fellows, and Research Assistants); recipients of externally funded (non-NYU) scholarships are eligible
  • Are enrolling as a non-credit participant

You must submit your scholarship application immediately after your general program application in order to receive a timely decision. 

Astor Study Abroad Scholarship for Full-Time Teachers

The Astor Study Abroad Award helps teachers in New York City who are also students at NYU finance international academic experiences. Awards ranging from $500 to $2,500 may be used to offset the cost of participation in our short-term study abroad programs. Each year, we award a limited number of full-time teachers employed at a NYC public schools and charter schools this scholarship made possible through the generous gift of Brooke Astor. The awards and limited/competitive and will be granted as a discount on your Bursar bill.

If you wish to be considered for the award, first apply to the NYU Steinhardt study abroad program of your choice, and then complete the Astor Study Abroad application.

You must meet the following criteria in order to be eligible:

  • Matriculated as a student in a degree program at NYU
  • Employed as a full-time teacher in a public or charter school within an NYC district (we require verification of employment at the time of application)
  • Accepted and enrolled for credit in one of our short-term study abroad programs
  • Maintained good academic standing in your NYU degree program

You are not eligible if you:

  • Receive tuition remission from NYU or your home university (this includes employees, spouses, and dependents)
  • Receive any graduate-level fully funded fellowship or scholarship from NYU (including Steinhardt Fellows, Founders Fellows, and Research Assistantships)
  • Enroll in study abroad as a non-credit participant
