The program for visiting scholars, visiting research professors, and visiting exchange professors extends specified courtesy titles and privileges to scholars of distinction who visit NYU in order to engage in research and scholarship, and in general scholarly and cultural interaction with NYU’s faculty and students. The courtesy titles may not be granted for the purpose of providing free courses or other privileges to graduate or postgraduate students, or for the sole purpose of providing library privileges.

Visiting scholars, visiting research professors, and visiting exchange professors are considered guests of the University who may visit for a temporary period of up to one year (renewable). As non-employees, they have no teaching or other responsibilities and are not entitled to salary or housing. Visiting scholars, visiting research professors, and visiting exchange professors covered by this program may not in any way perform in the role of an employee at NYU.

Submitting an application to the Visiting Scholars Program:

  1. Visiting scholar candidates must first identify and contact a sponsoring faculty member from one of Steinhardt’s academic departments or research centers to discuss the activities they plan to pursue at NYU.
    • If there is agreement that the proposed activities will mutually benefit the visiting scholar and the sponsoring unit, the visiting scholar candidate then sends a completed Visiting Scholar Application Form along with their Curriculum Vitae, to the faculty sponsor.
    • Faculty sponsors must download and then write a cover letter in support of the visiting scholar’s application, addressing the following:
      • Introduction of the applicant and the purpose of the visit
      • Detailed explanation of the research activities
      • Comprehensive reasons for the recommendation
      • Explanation of the need for access to NYU facilities/systems
  2. Faculty sponsors submit the application package, including the three documents below, to the Google Form, who will secure the necessary school-level approvals and send the completed application to the Office of Academic Appointments for final consideration.
  3. The Office of Academic Appointments requires a minimum of 4-6 weeks to screen visiting scholar candidates and review their applications. This period is separate from any visa application processing handled by the Office of Global Services.
  4. Once approved, the Office of Research will send a “welcome packet” to the visiting scholar with detailed information about their visit.
