The Visiting Scholars Program is managed by the Office of Academic Appointments and extends specified courtesy titles and privileges to scholars of distinction who visit NYU to engage in research and scholarship.
The program for visiting scholars, visiting research professors, and visiting exchange professors extends specified courtesy titles and privileges to scholars of distinction who visit NYU in order to engage in research and scholarship, and in general scholarly and cultural interaction with NYU’s faculty and students. Visiting Scholars should be individuals whom our faculty would readily recognize and engage with as academic colleagues. The courtesy titles may not be granted for the purpose of providing free courses or other privileges to graduate or postgraduate students, or for the sole purpose of providing library privileges.
Visiting scholars, visiting research professors, and visiting exchange professors are considered guests of the University who may visit for a temporary period of up to one year (renewable). As non-employees, they have no teaching or other responsibilities and are not entitled to salary or housing. Visiting scholars, visiting research professors, and visiting exchange professors covered by this program may not in any way perform in the role of an employee at NYU.
Visiting scholar candidates must first identify and contact a sponsoring faculty member from one of Steinhardt’s academic departments or research centers to discuss the activities they plan to pursue at NYU.

Overview & Key Rules
- What it is: A courtesy, non-employee affiliation for external scholars to conduct independent research and collaborate with NYU faculty.
- Duration: Up to 12 months (eligible for a single 12-month extension).
- Important Constraints:
- Unpaid position (no salary or benefits).
- No teaching, administrative, or staff duties.
- Must have a full-time faculty sponsor in residence.
Eligibility
Before applying, ensure the candidate meets these criteria:
- Holds an academic appointment elsewhere, is an independent scholar, government official, or junior researcher with proven academic proficiency.
- Has a defined research project aligning with the sponsoring department's mission.
- Is not a current or recent paid NYU employee doing similar work.
- Is not a graduate student seeking access for personal research (see the Research Affiliates policy instead).
Application Process
As of September 1, 2026, all requests use the new online ViSITS system.
- Check Visa Needs First: If a J-1 visa is required, reach out to the Office of Research before submitting the portal request. We recommend 3+ months before the start date.
- Gather Materials: Ensure all required applicant details and sponsor statements are ready.
- Submit via ViSITS: Applications can be submitted by the Faculty Sponsor or an administrative proxy via NYU Home (search for the "NYU ViSITS" card).
- Internal Reviews: Requires approval from the Department Chair/Director, A&S HR, the Provost's Office (OAA),and Ethics & Compliance (OEC).
Timeline & Planning
- Standard Review: 2 to 4 weeks from submission to final approval.
- Visa Processing (if applicable): Add 3+ months before the start date via OGS.
- Arrival Rule: Scholars must not arrive on campus until official approval is secured.
