Designed to be completed in two years of full-time study, this program enables you to learn:

  • How to create and implement pre-K–12 sequential dance programs in public and independent schools
  • How to plan, implement, and assess dance education in diverse urban settings
  • Research in dance education, technique and pedagogy, teaching creative movement, and theory and philosophy of dance education

Graduates are research-informed and proficient teachers with a complete understanding of urban school systems and the role of dance education within them.

During your first year in the program, you will complete fieldwork observing dance instruction in New York City schools. During your second year, you will complete two student teaching placements in New York City schools, working with cooperating teachers who are experienced, certified dance educators. You will have the unique opportunity to learn how to teach, create, and perform dance – and to build community – in Kampala, Uganda, or take part in other NYU Steinhardt global study programs.
