Teaching Dance, All Grades: Student Teaching and Observation
Information for Students
As a graduate student in Teaching Dance, All Grades (Pre-K-12), you are required to complete 100 hours of supervised field observations in New York City school dance settings. This fieldwork takes place as part of your coursework during your first year in the program.
In your second year of study, you will complete two student teaching placements, one in a New York City elementary school (grades pre-K-5) and one in a secondary school (grades 6-12). Each placement consists of a minimum of 150 hours of teaching and takes place under the close supervision of experienced dance teachers.

Information for Host Organizations
Our outstanding dance education curriculum in Teaching Dance, All Grades (Pre-K-12) prepares graduates to teach dance in elementary and secondary private and public schools. Coursework includes teaching dance content courses, pedagogy courses, and a culminating curriculum project that leads to a final teaching portfolio. Learn more about the program.
Our master’s degree students complete two student teaching placements in their second year of study. Each placement consists of a minimum of 150 hours of teaching in New York City elementary and secondary schools, under the supervision of certified dance educators. During their first year of study, our students complete 100 hours of fieldwork observations in New York City public school dance settings, gaining familiarity with the context of dance education in a multicultural urban location. Completion of this degree leads to eligibility for New York State certification as a Teacher of Dance, Pre-K-12 with reciprocity in numerous states.
