The 40-credit MA in Teaching Dance K-12 (Initial Certification) uniquely prepares you for a successful career as a dance educator and teaching artist. Bolstered by fieldwork observations and student teaching placements, you’ll grow as a dancer and choreographer and deepen your knowledge of theory, practice, and the historical and cultural contexts from which to teach dance. You’ll also have the rare opportunity to learn how to teach, create, and perform dance – and to build community – in Kampala, Uganda, or take part in other NYU Steinhardt global study programs.
Core Course Sequence
You’ll take classes in dance education research, teaching creative movement, methods and techniques of teaching dance, and the history, culture, and pedagogy of dance. Guided electives offer an in-depth look into specific dance styles. The program culminates in a seminar addressing issues in dance education, in which you will integrate theory and practice in a dance-related curriculum design or research project.
