Teacher Certification Disclosure

Steinhardt’s Bachelor of Science (BS), Master of Arts (MA), Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT), and Advanced Certificate (Adv Cert) teacher certification programs meet the educational requirements for teacher certification (professional licensure) in New York State.

NYU Steinhardt students who are enrolled in an in-person (residential) Initial or Professional teacher certification program are considered to be located and reside in New York State, pursuant to federal regulations (Professional Licensure Rules under 34 CFR 668).

If you plan to teach or work in a state other than New York, the simplest pathway is through interstate reciprocity. Interstate reciprocity for teachers permits students who have completed a teacher preparation program out of state to apply for the equivalent certification or license in the state where they plan to teach. Some states may have additional requirements, such as passing state specific required exams, completing additional coursework, such as a course on the state’s history, experience background, application fees, background checks and fingerprinting, and/or others. We strongly encourage graduates of our teacher education programs to secure New York State certification prior to applying for an equivalent certification in their own state.

Individual states often offer teacher certificates in different configurations than those offered by New York State. Please review the state websites below for that state’s certification requirements and guidance for out of state applicants.

NYU Steinhardt has made a good faith effort to determine if each residential and distance learning teacher education program meets the educational requirements for equivalent certification in each state, the District of Columbia, and US territories, but it can only guarantee that each program meets the educational requirements for New York State.

Distance Learning Programs

NYU Steinhardt offers two distance learning programs:

  • Teacher Residency (Secondary Subjects 7-12; Students with Disabilities, All Grades, offered in partnership with select New York State and Washington, D.C. schools)
  • Inclusive Childhood Teacher Residency (Childhood Education, Grades 1-6; Students with disabilities, All Grades, offered in partnership with select New York State schools)

These programs are one-year combined Master of Arts in Teaching and residency programs. Both programs meet the educational requirements for teacher certification in New York State. The Teacher Residency program also meets the educational requirements for teacher certification in Washington, D.C.
