Requirements for Provisional and Permanent Certificates (PPS only)
Provisional Certificate - the first certificate (valid for five years) obtained by a candidate who has met the requirements of Pupil Personnel Services certificates.
Permanent Certificate - the final teaching certificate obtained by a candidate who has met the requirements of Pupil Personnel Services certificates. Requirements include a valid Provisional Certificate, an appropriate master’s degree and two years of PPS experience.
Requirements for Initial and Professional Certificates
Initial Certificate - the first teaching certificate (valid for five years) obtained by a candidate who has met the requirements of a NYS teaching or School Building Leader certificate. Requirements include the completion of a NYS state approved teacher certification program including workshops, passing scores on the required NYS Teacher Certification Exams including the edTPA and fingerprint clearance.
Professional Certificate - the final teaching certificate obtained by a candidate who has met the requirements of teaching or School Building Leader (SBL) certificates. Requirements include an appropriate master's degree and three years of teaching experience including one year of mentored teaching experience. Professional Certificate in SBL also requires one year of school building leader experience and one year of mentored school building experience. Holders of the Professional Certificate will be required to complete 100 hours of Continuing Teacher and Leader Education (CTLE) every five years.
