This minor introduces you to how data-driven solutions and applications can inform and improve education practices, policy making, and implementation. You’ll develop your knowledge through foundations courses and practice your skills in survey development, data literacy, and quantitative problem solving in a data and education practicum course. Open to all NYU undergraduates.

In this minor, you’ll learn how data-driven solutions and applications can improve and inform education practices, policy making, and implementation. You'll discover the ways education, as a tool, can impact many aspects of society beyond school boundaries.
You’ll use a critical lens to examine important issues in the use of data to address education issues including access and equity, ethics and values, both in the US and globally. You’ll learn how to understand and manage education data, how to think about and examine the complexities of education data, how and why education data are collected, and what kinds of critical education issues can be explored and solved through data.
Through coursework and practical application, you’ll gain the following skills:
- Identify various education data sources and analyze and incorporate quantitative information to make stronger arguments in policy briefings, advocacy and communications in other areas.
- Develop survey instruments and use data collection tools such as Qualtrics to gather primary data for research.
- Develop data literacy skills to synthesize quantitative information from research papers and reports in education to make informed decisions/recommendations in education practices in both public and private settings.
- Develop strong quantitative problem solving skills through experiential learning opportunities in education consulting and social entrepreneurship classes.
This minor is open to all undergraduates across NYU who have completed at least one semester.
You must apply for the minor in Albert. When you submit an application for the minor, it will be reviewed by both your home school and the Data and Education program. If it is approved, the minor in Data and Education will appear on your transcript.
If you are a Steinhardt student, you may not apply for the minor using the cross-school minor application. You must use the Minor Declaration form, which is available through your home department or the Steinhardt Office of Student Affairs.
