The Education Studies Student Committee

Who We Are:

The Education Studies Student Committee (ESSC) was founded in 2016 and is compromised of student representatives of the Education Studies Program. The mission of ESSC is to create a unified community across the student body. By providing educational, social, and academic opportunities, ESSC hopes to enrich the undergraduate experience of the Education Studies program and foster an exchange of knowledge and cross-cultural understanding. Furthermore, ESSC aims to build lasting relationships between faculty, alumni, and current students.

How To Get Involved:

Any Education Studies student is welcome to join our events, and apply to be an official member of the committee. Applications are open at the end of the spring semester, and members serve for a one year term.

Janna Wang, President

Janna Wang (she/her) is double-majoring in Education Studies and Applied Psychology, with a minor in Business of Entertainment, Media, and Technology. Having grown up in Taiwan, Janna developed a deep appreciation for the role of education in shaping opportunities, inspiring her commitment to leveraging innovations in education technology to create more equitable, engaging, and personalized learning experiences. With a concentration in Impact and Entrepreneurship, she applies her knowledge to leadership roles that empower students by turning vision into action. As the president of ESSC, she is eager to foster a collaborative community where students can build meaningful connections and find support for their personal, academic, and professional growth.

Jesse Schumann, Vice President

Jesse Schumann (he/him) is a junior majoring in Education Studies. Growing up in Oklahoma, his first year of high school coincided with a statewide teacher strike. This formative experience shaped his motivation for reforming the public education system and becoming a teacher himself. Jesse is excited to work alongside the other members of ESSC to curate experiences for all those passionate about education in all of its forms.

Faye Zhou, USG Representative

Faye Zhou (she/her) is a Sophomore currently in the Liberal Studies Program and transitioning into Education Studies. Born in Shanghai and raised in both Shanghai and California, she draws on her cross-cultural experiences to inform how she approaches education and community building. She is passionate about examining how education, law, and policy intersect with issues of equity, and she hopes to bring these perspectives into her academic and leadership work. As a member of ESSC, she is committed to fostering community and supporting her peers as they navigate both personal and academic growth.

Jennifer Zhou, Secretary

Jennifer Zhou (she/her) is double-majoring in Education Studies and Applied Psychology. Her interests lie in examining the role of education in shaping cross-cultural understanding and equity. As Secretary of ESSC, she helps with communications, organizing events, and managing the club’s social media. Jennifer is excited to connect with peers who share a passion for learning and to make ESSC events welcoming and fun for everyone. Jennifer looks forward to fostering an inclusive community and supporting ESSC in creating opportunities for connection, collaboration, and learning.

Annie Chen, Treasurer

Annie Chen (she/her) is a senior majoring in Education Studies and in the Educational Leadership, Politics, and Advocacy (ELPA) Dual Degree Program. She is passionate about exploring how universities can foster cross-cultural understanding and create inclusive environments for students from diverse backgrounds. Annie hopes to work in international education or higher education student affairs to promote global learning opportunities and support underrepresented student communities. As a treasurer, she hopes to collaborate with other E-board members to help students better navigate college life both academically and socially.
