MA in Teaching Dance, All Grades, Professional Certification

Build on Your Teaching Experience and Pedagogical Skills

In this master of arts program, educators who already hold initial certification in teaching dance can enrich and expand their dance and pedagogical skills and refine and update their teaching practices, with an option to transition into teaching in higher education. You can complete this degree in three semesters of full-time study. 

Graduates are eligible for New York State professional certification as a teacher of dance, all grades (pre-K-12).

What You'll Learn
  • How to create and implement pre-K-12 sequential dance programs in public and independent schools
  • How to plan, implement, and assess dance education in diverse urban settings
  • Research in dance education, technique and pedagogy, teaching creative movement, and methods and materials for teaching dance
  • Graduates are research-informed and proficient teachers with a complete understanding of urban school systems and the role of dance education within them.

How You'll Learn

Courses in Research, Dance Pedagogy, Dance Content, and Electives
The curriculum includes research in dance education, dance content courses, general and subject-specific pedagogy courses, and a culminating curriculum project that is applicable to your current teaching setting. You’ll also have the opportunities to take electives such as Hip Hop Dance, Intercultural Dance, and West African Dance.  

Study Abroad Opportunities
You will have the unique opportunity to learn how to teach, create, and perform dance – and to build community – in Kampala, Uganda, or take part in other NYU Steinhardt global study programs
