Chamber music is an essential part of your instrumental performance education at NYU Steinhardt.
Who Can Join
Chamber music ensembles are organized through each Instrumental Program.
Stephanie Baer, Director of String Studies
Matt Sullivan, Director of Woodwind Studies
Woodwind Chamber Music auditions are required of all performance majors and open to non-majors, by audition. Prepare two complete and contrasting works.
Wayne du Maine, Director of Brass Studies
Dr. Manuel Laufer, Director of Collaborative Piano
Chamber Music for Pianists
Piano Performance majors are required to register for chamber music each semester. Opportunities include ensembles coached by Artist Faculty in Piano Studies, Strings, and Winds, such as duos and trios, larger ensembles for mixed instrumentation, the NYU Contemporary Music Ensemble (directed by Jonathan Haas), and the NYU New Music Ensemble (directed by Esther Lamneck). Song Repertoire courses exploring the English, German, French, Italian, and Spanish traditions are co-taught by Artist Faculty in Vocal Performance and Piano Performance; these also fulfill the chamber requirement, as do placements with the NYU orchestras. For their assignment, piano performance majors should contact Dr. Manuel Laufer.
