Post-Master’s Advanced Certificate, Vocal Pedagogy

Study vocal pedagogy theory and practice with our renowned faculty.  Take courses in vocology, vocal repertoire, and diction for singers while also receiving private one-on-one lessons with faculty.  Whether focussing  on classical voice or music theatre, in NYU Steinhardt’s unparalleled facilities, you’ll develop your personal artistry while acquiring the skills to succeed after graduation.  

Core Course Sequence

Your coursework will focus on vocology theory and practice, diction, and repertoire.  You’ll also have the opportunity to choose elective courses to focus on subjects of your choice, mentored by our faculty.  You’ll complete your courses on a part-time schedule over two years.  

Sample Elective Courses

Students can take a variety of classes throughout the Department of Music and Performing Arts Professions, collaborating with the programs in Music Business, Music Technology, Screen Scoring, Songwriting and Instrumental Performance.

Placement exams are given prior to the start of the fall semester. For each exam that you do not pass you will be assigned a review course. The credits for any undergraduate review courses you are required to take do not count toward the certificate.

Minimum Grade Requirements

Students must earn a minimum of a B in any MPAVP-GE course in order for the credits for that course to count toward the degree. Students must earn a minimum of a B in Vocal Pedagogy in order to remain in the Advanced Certificate Program.

Students must demonstrate proficiency in Music Theory, Aural Skills, and Music History through a diagnostic exam or the completion of appropriate coursework in addition to degree requirements.

Students must demonstrate proficiency in Italian Diction, English Diction, German Diction, and French Diction through a diagnostic exam or the completion of appropriate coursework in addition to degree requirements.
