Degree Details
Official Degree Title
Your training will explore vocal technique, vocal function, and the basics of vocal anatomy and physiology. You'll craft a technical foundation in vocal production while training as a hybrid vocalist, along with a demonstrable understanding that the best singing is an amalgamation of a freely produced sound and a personal need to communicate. You’ll learn how to communicate through song effectively, working on song analysis and developing an awareness for how the prosody of the language plays a role in popular songwriting and performance. You'll also have opportunities to cross-train in musical theatre or classical voice and participate in a variety of workshops as well as audition for fully staged productions and concerts, performing under the guidance of directors, choreographers, conductors, and designers highly experienced in the music industry. Opportunities are also available to participate in contemporary ensembles.
Our curriculum fully integrates the study of voice with live performance. You will take movement, acting, and dance classes taught by working professionals in the industry and voice training with leading vocalists from New York's professional community. Every semester a sequence of contemporary vocal workshops focuses on performance skills, vocal production, song analysis and interpretation, and microphone and recording techniques as well as musicianship skills. You’ll take classes focusing on speech/diction, audition and business skills, and stagecraft, with elective courses available in areas such as music technology, music business, and music education. You will build your knowledge of American music history chronologically – from roots and bluegrass music through contemporary styles such as R&B and hip hop.
You will find here a supportive community of performers who work with you and celebrate your successes. As your terminal degree experience, you’ll perform a fully staged concert. Our program of study will provide you with a solid foundation of healthy vocal technique on which you can build a career in whatever area of voice performance you choose to pursue.
