How You'll Learn

A Full Liberal Arts Education in a Conservatory Setting
To complete this bachelor's degree, you'll take 128 points, or credits, of classes: 44 in liberal arts and 84 in music. You will complete a range of liberal arts core courses, including introductory study of the humanities, social sciences, science, and quantitative reasoning, as well as complete core music classes in music history, music theory, aural comprehension, and keyboard skills. You'll also have the opportunity to take elective courses in music technology, music business, and music education.

The Integration of Singing and Acting
Our curriculum is designed for the accomplished young singer who seeks a program that fully integrates the study of voice with the study of acting. We're committed to teaching vocal techniques that are sustainable while creating an environment that allows you to explore styles ranging from classical through musical theatre, as well as other contemporary repertoire expected of today's professional singers. You will take acting and dance classes taught by working professionals in the industry and voice training with leading vocalists from New York's professional community. You'll also have opportunities to cross traditional lines and take classical voice training and participate in opera workshops and fully-staged opera productions.

Performance Workshops
The core of our music theatre specialization training – along with private voice study, acting, dance, music theatre repertoire, and music theatre history – lies in a series of intensive performance skills workshops that explore such critical areas as movement, speech, diction, song study, scene study, audition skills, and business skills: essential "tools of the trade" you'll need to pursue your professional career.

Performance Opportunities
In addition to work in classrooms and studios, the program offers performance opportunities in fully staged productions under the guidance of professional directors, choreographers, conductors, musical directors, and designers. Our guest artists and faculty are drawn from New York's vibrant community of professional artists who count among their credits Broadway, off-Broadway, regional theatre, and national tours.

Graduation Showcase
You will perform a senior recital as your terminal degree experience. In addition, you will make your New York City "debut" in your final semester when you are presented to agents, casting directors, directors, and producers in our Graduation Showcase, a revue designed to feature the work of each student and help you make your first professional contacts in the industry.

Dual Degree Option: BM Music Performance/MA Music Education

We also offer a dual degree that allows you to earn a bachelor of music in composition or performance and a master of arts in music education in only five years. You can take courses towards your graduate degree during your junior and senior years, then complete the MA in one additional year of study, becoming eligible for New York State initial certification as a teacher of music, grades K-12. See more information about this dual degree and how to apply.
