How You'll Learn

Intensive Training in Classical Voice and Vocal Pedagogy
Your specialized coursework will include classes in opera performance, vocal pedagogy theory and practice, and classical song repertoire as well as private voice instruction with leading New York City vocalists working in opera, recital, and concert singing. The program integrates the study of voice with the study of acting – you will take acting and dance courses conducted by working professionals in the industry. You'll also have the opportunity to take classes in diction, vocal coaching, and classical voice business skills; and guided electives in speech pathology and speech science.

You must be able to demonstrate a technical foundation in vocal production that will allow your voice to evolve in an efficient and healthy manner throughout the years that follow your training at NYU. In addition, you must demonstrate a respect for the value of the text – the words that are sung as well as the sounds that are made – along with an understanding that the best singing is an amalgamation of a freely produced sound and a personal need to communicate.

Performance Opportunities at NYU and Throughout New York City
In addition to work in classrooms and studios, the program offers performance opportunities in fully-staged productions under the guidance of professional directors, choreographers, designers, and conductors who count among their credits opera companies and theatre both in and out of New York City. You will have the opportunity to cross traditional lines and participate in music theatre workshops as well as fully staged music theatre productions.
