Online Master’s in School Counseling

A valuable resource for vulnerable children and their families, school counselors help students achieve their goals. In this master of arts program, you’ll get the education and clinical training to become a professional pre-K–12 school counselor, working in public and private schools, colleges, and community agencies. Graduates are eligible for New York State certification as guidance counselors. You must reside in the US and not need a visa to pursue this online degree, and you may choose to concentrate your degree on bilingual school populations.

This program is accredited by the Master’s in Psychology and Counseling Accreditation Council (MPCAC) for 2015 through 2025. Graduates of this program meet the academic requirements for licensure in the state of New York. Each state sets their own policies, regulations, and standards for licensure. If you intend to pursue licensure in a state other than New York, you should consult our Licensure page for more information on whether our program meets the academic requirements for licensure in that state and whether there is additional course work you may need to complete to meet that state’s requirements.

Students interested in the Bilingual concentration must be able to participate in required supervised fieldwork within the five boroughs of New York City.

How to Apply

These instructions and requirements are for all applicants. Your application will require the following items. The following are acceptable document types for uploads: .pdf, .jpeg, .jpg, .gif, .tiff, .png, .doc, .docx, and bitmap.

1. Prepare Your Application

Résumé/CV

You are required to upload a copy of your most recent résumé or curriculum vitae as part of your application. Be sure to include all relevant work experience, including any part- or full-time work experience or volunteer experiences in clinical settings.

Statement of Purpose

This statement is your opportunity to introduce yourself to the admissions committee and demonstrate your knowledge of and passion for the field. Let us know your goals, interests, and career plans as they relate to earning your degree. Specifically, how have your experiences – education, volunteer, and/or work experience – led you to pursue a career in counseling? The statement should be two to three double-spaced pages, and it should explain your reasons for pursuing a graduate degree in counseling.

Letters of Recommendation

Submit two letters of recommendation. Be sure to request them well in advance of the deadline. Read detailed instructions.

Transcripts

Upload one official copy of transcripts from every postsecondary school you have attended or are attending. Make sure to request them in advance of the deadline.

If you completed or are completing a degree at an institution outside of the US or Canada, you are required to provide a WES or ECE evaluation. Please review our requirements for translation and a course-by-course evaluation of your transcripts.

Not required.

Proficiency in English

These scores are required only if your native language is not English and you did not receive the equivalent of a four-year US undergraduate degree in which the main language of instruction was English. In order to apply for the program, you must have a minimum TOEFL score of 100.

Please note: All applicants must be US citizens or permanent residents living in the United States for the duration of the program. Students living outside of the United States are not eligible for the program at this time.

Nonrefundable Application Fee

A $75 nonrefundable application fee is required upon submission of your application and can be paid using any major credit card. If you submit by the priority deadline, the nonrefundable application fee will be reduced to $45.

3. Receive Your Admissions Decision

Application Policies

Application deadlines are "in-office" deadlines, not postmark deadlines. It is your responsibility to ensure that all materials are in the Office of Graduate Admissions by the appropriate deadline, and we reserve the right to return any application that arrives after the deadline. Only completed applications will be considered. Should a deadline fall on a weekend, the in-office deadline will be the next business day. We advise you to apply early.
