In Solidarity with Our Asian Community

Dear MPAP Community,

On behalf of our MPAP community, I am writing to express our unequivocal support for President Hamilton’s and Dean Knott’s statements in solidarity and in mourning with the Asian community and in repudiation of anti-Asian aggression and violence. I write to echo and reinforce their affirmations of our community’s values of promoting racial equity and advancing racial healing and our commitment to the safety and well-being of all people of Asian descent. Anti-Asian bias and discrimination, as well as racism of any kind, is simply wrong.

I am writing to ask that in your daily actions, large and small, you continue to support kindness, reconciliation, and healing. We will only make progress if we ALL rise together to meet the challenge of fighting bias, hatred, and violence wherever we encounter them.

As communicated by Dean Knott, if you have experienced or witnessed anti-Asian violence or harassment, please report it to the Stop AAPI Hate Reporting Center and the New York Attorney General's Office through their hotline at 1-800-771-7755 or email civil.rights@ag.ny.gov. You can also take a training called How to Respond to Anti-Asian/American Harassment and find additional resources through NYU’s Office of Global Inclusion and the NYU Asian/Pacific/American Institute.

Please know we are connected and dependent as human beings and must support one another through these challenging times. As chair, I will continue to work to ensure that our department reflects inclusivity to respect EVERYONE’S values.
