The University Concert Band has developed into one of NYU’s premiere all-University ensembles. The members of The University Concert Band all share a common love of playing wind-band music, but also, more importantly, playing their instruments in a wind-band setting. The ensemble has had membership from all schools at NYU and now has a member of the University leadership as well: former Provost David McLaughlin. Our esteemed former Provost was a trumpet player in high school and has joyfully accepted an invitation to dust off his trumpet and spend time with us in the trumpet section.
Who Can Join
Membership in the University Concert Band is by audition only, but the ensemble is not strictly limited to music majors. If you are able to attend the rehearsals, prepare your music for each rehearsal and performance, and play your instrument at a high enough level, you may also become a member of the band. Even if you do not own your instrument, there may be an instrument for you to use.
Spring 2021 Audition Information
Auditions will be held on January 25 and 28 from 7-9 PM via Zoom. Students should prepare two short excerpts of their choosing: one demonstrating level of technique development and the other depth of musicality (excerpts, solos, etudes, all are acceptable). Total time of excerpts should be no more than 5 minutes.
The ensemble meets remotely on Mondays and Thursdays from 7-9pm.
The course is available for 0-3 credits for graduate students and 0-1 credits for undergraduate students. (MPAME-UE 1083/MPAME-GE 2083)
