NYU Wind Symphony

Music and Performing Arts Professions Ensembles

The NYU Wind Symphony is the premiere wind band at NYU, performing a full season of concerts annually, including special chamber wind repertoire opportunities, works by NYU student composers, and creative works for music majors. The ensemble explores both significant, traditional repertoire and new repertoire by living, diverse composers who write for woodwinds, brass, and percussion. Led by Dr. Jason Noble, the ensemble seeks to provide a 21st century medium by which significant music for the emerging wind repertoire can be explored, examined, refined, and performed in an atmosphere of musical excellence, collegial responsibility, creative inquiry, and progressive philosophy.

In 2021-2022, the ensemble began a new initiative to commission works by BBIA (Black, Brown, Indigenous, Asian) and underrepresented composers, with a goal of contributing to the growing and evolving body of repertoire for winds and percussion. The ensemble is committed to diversity, equity, inclusion, belonging, and to the concept of student voice and student choice. A focus on both performance excellence (the “what”) and performance understanding (the “why”) provides the educational and theoretical framework by which the course material is delivered. The NYU Wind Symphony is a partner with the College Band Directors National Association (CBDNA), and the National Association for Music Education (NAfME). The NYU Wind Symphony supports the mission of …And We Were Heard, the Institute for Composer DiversityThe MayDay GroupWomen Band Directors International (WDBI), and Minority Band Directors National Association (MBDNA).

Note (for 2022-2023 only): NYU Wind Symphony has been carefully scheduled to not conflict with any required music performance or music education courses. Attendance is required at both weekly rehearsals in order to be admitted to the ensemble. In very rare circumstances, students may petition the instructor to register for half-time status in the course. This exemption is only granted to music education majors who are on active placement in a senior-year daytime student teaching placement or students who have a completely unavoidable outside major-requirement singleton course that cannot be scheduled at any other time with documentation from your academic advisor. Please email Dr. Jason Noble immediately if you and your academic advisor see an unavoidable course conflict that may prevent attendance at both required weekly rehearsals.

Course Registration Details: NYU Wind Symphony courses are housed under NYU Music Education (MPAME) in the ALBERT registration system. All students must receive a course registration code in order to be cleared to register for wind symphony. You will be given this code after auditions by either Kaitlyn Walker., Sean Statser, or Dr. Jason Thompson
