Music and Performing Arts Professions Ensembles

Chamber music is an essential part of your instrumental performance education at NYU Steinhardt.

Who Can Join

Chamber music ensembles are organized through each Instrumental Program.

Stephanie Baer, Director of String Studies
String Chamber Music ensembles are open only to performance majors.

Matt Sullivan, Director of Woodwind Studies
Woodwind Chamber Music auditions are required of all performance majors and open to non-majors, by audition. Prepare two complete and contrasting works.

Wayne du Maine, Director of Brass Studies
Brass Chamber Music faculty include Barbara Oldham, Eric Reed, Kyle Turner, and Wayne du Maine.

Dr. Manuel Laufer, Director of Collaborative Piano

Piano Performance majors are required to register for chamber music each semester. Opportunities include small ensembles coached by Artist Faculty in Piano Studies, Strings, and Winds, and Song Repertoire courses co-taught by Artist Faculty in Vocal Performance and Piano Performance. The chamber requirement for pianists is also fulfilled by placement in large ensembles, such as the NYU Orchestras, Baroque Ensemble, and Contemporary Music Ensemble (directed by Jonathan Haas). Song Repertoire courses exploring the English, German, French, Italian, and Spanish traditions are co-taught by Artist Faculty in Vocal Performance and Piano Performance; these also fulfill the chamber requirement, as do placements with the NYU orchestras. For their assignment, piano performance majors should contact Dr. Manuel Laufer.
