Research description/bio: Sofía A. Gómez-Doyle is a full-time doctoral student in the International Education program at NYU Steinhardt. Her research explores the intersection of global migration and access to education, with a particular focus on policies that support immigrant and newcomer students. She currently serves as Managing Editor for American Indian Quarterly (AIQ) and is a graduate assistant in Dr. Sophia Rodriguez’s Immigrant Ed Next Lab at NYU.

Sofía brings over a decade of experience in education, grounded in human rights, social justice, and equity. Prior to her doctoral studies, she taught third grade as a Bilingual/ESL teacher in the Chicago Public Schools. As an undergraduate at NYU Abu Dhabi, she co-founded the Girls’ Education Network (GEN), a leadership development program for middle and high school girls in Abu Dhabi, which reached over 350 students.

Her commitment to education policy and equity is further reflected in her experiences, including internships at the Human Rights Advocacy Centre in Accra, Ghana, and the White House during the Obama Administration. She has been recognized for her leadership and service with numerous honors, including the Princeton in Africa Fellowship, the NYU Abu Dhabi Associate Vice Chancellor’s Excellence Award (2018), the NYU President’s Service Award (2016), and the inaugural Dalai Lama Fellowship (2015).

Sofía holds a Master of Arts in Teaching from the University of Chicago and a Bachelor of Arts from NYU Abu Dhabi. She is also a graduate of the United World College of Southern Africa in Eswatini.
