The 39-credit MA in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages, Grades K–12 (Initial Certification) equips you with the pedagogical tools and language, literacy and linguistics training to teach English to speakers of other languages. You’ll gain hands-on experience through student teaching and fieldwork placements, with personalized mentorship from working teachers and NYU faculty. See up-to-date certification requirements.

Core Course Sequence & Culminating Experience

You’ll take core foundation classes in linguistic analysis and American English, as well as pedagogical classes in teaching and learning and specialized instruction in second language classrooms, intercultural perspectives, and bilingual multicultural education. Elective courses include language assessment and evaluation, teaching second language in a technological society, and teaching second language across content areas. In addition to student teaching and field work, you’ll also complete a research and capstone project focused on second language acquisition.
