Note
The Practical Knowledge requirement includes courses designed to broaden students' access to practical applications of educational theatre methodology. These are courses that provide workshop experiences, rely on current scholarship from theatre education, and have wide applicability to common practices in the students' specialization and profession.
Specialization Course Electives are closely related to and supportive of the student's area of specialization: drama in education, applied theatre, or theatre for young audiences and play production.
Additional Program Requirements
Prerequisites
Prerequisites in theatre form competence are required, especially in theatre history, dramatic literature, acting and directing, and drama criticism. Applicants who have not taken courses in these areas at the undergraduate or master’s level must take them before fulfilling the Specialization Course Electives requirement, even if it means that more than 42 credits are required to complete this EdD program. Additional courses in theatre form in excess of those required for this degree may be selected by advisement.
Candidacy
To achieve candidacy students need to complete three projects:
Topic Review
The purpose of the Topic Review is to identify the student’s proposed topic, the significance or need for the study, and to examine the doctoral candidate's preliminary grasp of pertinent issues articulated in the literature. To be eligible to submit a topic review, students must have passed the doctoral candidacy examination and fulfilled any conditions (if applicable); secured approval from the Program Advisor and, if already appointed, from the Chair of the student’s dissertation committee;and have completed required research courses.
Dissertation Proposal
All students must complete a Dissertation Proposal.. Submission of doctoral proposals is governed by the school-wide policies and procedures for your dissertation proposal.
Dissertation Defense
MPAP follows Steinhardt’s dissertation defense procedures.
