EdD, Educational Theatre in Colleges and Communities

The 42-credit EdD in Educational Theatre in Colleges and Communities prepares you to be a practicing professional, developing a collaborative artistic praxis and the leadership skills needed to shape a range of educational, cultural, and vocational communities of learning. Specializing in drama in education, applied theatre, or theatre for young audiences and play production, you’ll emerge as a practice-led researcher bringing your training to arts professions, schools, and cultural institutions.

Core Course Sequence

You’ll take coursework in both foundational research methods and advanced methods of inquiry. This arts-based research training is complemented by core classes in key content areas, specialization electives, and practicums, selected by advisement and designed to respond to your individual and authentic research interests. The program culminates in a doctoral project, which might include a dramatic work or other arts-based project, an action research project, an internship, or another applied theatre residency in lieu of a research-based dissertation.

The practical knowledge requirement includes graduate-level courses that are designed to broaden students’ access to practical applications of educational theatre methodology. To this end, courses are considered practical when they:

  1. Provide workshop experiences;
  2. Strongly rely on current scholarship from theatre education; and
  3. Have wide applicability to common practices in the students’ specialization and profession.
2

Electives closely related to and supportive of the student’s area of specialization: drama in education, applied theatre, or theatre for young audiences and play production.

Prerequisites

Prerequisites in theatre form competence are required, especially in theatre history, dramatic literature, acting and directing, and drama criticism. Applicants who have not taken courses in these area at the undergraduate or master’s level must take them before fulfilling the Specialization Course Electives requirement, even if it means that more than 42 credits are required to complete this EdD program. Additional courses in theatre form in excess of those required for this degree may be selected by advisement.

Candidacy, Culminating Study, Maintaining Matriculation

A total of 42 credits beyond the master’s degree (depending on the student’s previous academic background) is required for the EdD degree. Doctoral students must complete a minimum of 36 credits in residence beyond the master’s degree. A candidacy examination is given to determine if students have reached competency.

As a culminating study, students design and conduct a practitioner-based study under the direction of doctoral program faculty, developing a project drawn from one or more of the program’s specializations. The culminating study requires a formal proposal and approval by doctoral faculty. Three full-time faculty members are required to serve on doctoral students’ culminating study committee.

Upon completion of coursework, students must register in MPAIA-GE 3400 Performing Arts Research Collegium each semester in order to maintain matriculation.
