The 128-credit BS in Educational Theatre blends immersive study and live performance under the guidance of innovative, conscientious faculty at the forefront of their art. Graduates teach and perform in cultural institutions, community centers, and educational settings, where they lead education and outreach programs that blend high-quality theatre with impactful education.

College Core Curriculum (CORE)

NYU’s College Core Curriculum provides undergraduates with a foundational academic experience in the liberal arts, including courses in expository writing, foreign language, and foundations of contemporary culture and scientific inquiry. In addition to these subject areas, you’ll have the opportunity to explore liberal arts electives, gaining the skills and breadth of intellectual perspective to flourish in your major program of study and as a successful professional in the field. 

Major Requirements

In the BS in Educational Theatre, you’ll take a content core that includes educational theatre, acting, directing, theatre history, stagecraft, and design. In your second year, you’ll select a concentration pathway in Drama in Education, Applied Theatre, or Theatre Performance and Production. Over the course of your studies, you’ll develop both teaching and performance skills through hands-on experience in our state-of-the-art facilities, culminating in a field experience and senior seminar.

Minor, Educational Theatre

The 16-18 credit minor in Educational Theatre introduces you to the transformative potential of the theatre arts, uniquely qualifying you for career opportunities in schools, cultural institutions, or community settings. You’ll explore pedagogical approaches to teaching drama and take courses in acting fundamentals, theatre as an art form, and the theory of creative drama, and electives like stagecraft, directing, and playwriting.

All students choose MPAET-UE 1029 Dramatic Activities in The Elementary Classroom or MPAET-UE 1068 Drama Activities in The Secondary Classroom to fulfill the Educational Theatre required coursework. Students in the Drama in Education pathway must also select whichever course, MPAET-UE 1029 Dramatic Activities in The Elementary Classroom or MPAET-UE 1068 Drama Activities in The Secondary Classroom, not previously completed.

At the end of the second year of study, students choose one of three pathway concentrations and complete 12 credits in that pathway.  The pathway options include Applied Theatre, Theatre Performance and Production, or Drama in Education.

BS, Educational Theatre with a double major in Dramatic Literature is also available for currently enrolled students.
