Malnutrition: From Screening to Intervention

This class is designed to strengthen students’ clinical nutrition knowledge specifically as it relates to the definition, screening, & assessment of adult malnutrition & to evidence based intervention strategies for the prevention & management of adult malnutrition.  The class will focus on adult malnutrition of the hospitalized patient and of the oncology patient. Through critical analysis of published research studies, students will develop an understanding of evidence-based practice as it relates to these areas.

Managing Prints and Multiples

Through lectures, demonstrations, and site visits, students explore the history, culture, and related art market and distribution system of prints, artists books and zines. Sessions examine Japanese, Chinese, European, Mexican, and North American print histories as well as books to objects. Students gain hands-on print
experience in visits to printmaking studios. In addition to completing two historical analyses projects, students produce an artist book on a relevant subject in the arts using one of the techniques studied in class.

Manual Techniques I

This course enables the student to apply manual therapy (including mobilization and manipulation) which consists of a broad group of passive intervention in which physical therapists use their hands to modulate pain, increase joint range of motion, reduce soft tissue inflammation, induce relaxation, improve contractile and noncontractile tissue extensibility, and improve pulmonary function.

Manual Techniques II

This course is the second in a series of two manual techniques courses that will enable the student to have an in-depth understand & “hands on experience” of manual techniques relevant to current clinical practice. The course focuses on joint-related manual techniques for evaluation & intervention in the following contests: to modulate pain, to increase joint range or motion, reduce soft tissue inflammation, induce relaxation, to improve contractile & non-contractile tissue extensibility, & to improve muscle activation. The course also provides the students with an introduction to the assessment of motion, including goniometry. A problem solving approach based on the International Classification of Function framework will be utilized throughout this course.

This course explores Martin Luther King's emergence, ideas, and impact as a protest leader. Topics will include the relationship between King and Presidents Kennedy and Johnson, the FBI's covert attempts to discredit King, and how the US government’s interaction with mass protest movements promotes and limits social change. Students will assess King's political strengths and weaknesses and the criticism he faced from rivals and opponents over his tactics, leadership style, vision for America, and critique of US foreign policy.

The Scholars Program promotes excellence in academic achievement and leadership.
