Market Histories

This course offers an historical survey of the development of the avant-garde market from its origins in Paris during the Impressionist period to today. It is articulated through the study of key moments and figures and it investigates the evolution of a complex system where the roles of galleries, museums, collectors, and critics are tightly interconnected. In a historically male-dominated environment, this course emphasizes the transformative contribution of a few exceptional women such as Peggy Guggenheim, Betty Parsons, and Ileana Sonnabend.
