Global Food Cultures: Shanghai

This course is an interdisciplinary and intercultural examination of human communication through food in Shanghai. Explores the social, economic, political, and cultural ramifications of food production and consumption. Students will have a unique opportunity to explore various local, regional and transnational, and food rituals.

Global Perspectives Higher Ed: Germany

A study abroad course program that examines the higher education system of Germany in comparison to the US and other countries. Germany now provides strong leadership in Europe in terms of economic growth and leadership of the European Union; less known is its robust system and diversified system of universities and its commitment to internationalization. Through visits to universities, policy organizations, and government planning agencies, students will have the opportunity to meet with rectors, faculty, researchers, and students themselves. Our goals will be to understand the opportunity structures for all groups in the country, including the large immigrant populations.

Global Perspectives in Higher Education: Brazil

Examines globalization and higher education in Brazil with comparison to the United States through an historical overview and an analysis of contemporary issues. Students will gain an understanding of the variety of higher education institutions in Brazil (large/small, public/private/religious, etc.) and will become familiar with issues of equity and access, internationalization in higher education, faculty and student mobility, variation among public versus private universities economic structures, the role of foreign university partnerships, and other higher education issues. Visits to public and private universities and colleges in Brazil allow students to engage in discussions with directors, faculty members, deans and students.

Global Perspectives in Higher Education: India

Designed to provide graduate students with an opportunity to examine India's higher education system and to discover and analyze similarities and differences in comparison to higher education in the United States. Through visits to universities and public and private colleges, we will engage in discussion with directors, faculty members, deans of students and their staffs and students themselves. Special lectures with sociologists and national officials will help us understand the goals and future aspirations of Indian higher education and how higher education meets the social, political, and cultural needs of society. In addition to meeting on the campus in New York, students will participate in a two week travel program in India that will provide an in-depth case study of its higher education. The course includes lectures from scholars and visits to Indian colleges and universities to meet with faculty, administrators, and students. Additional sessions will be held with directors of the national government commission on the future of higher education. Topics will include curricular options, admissions requirements, distribution of students by class and ethnic group, college climate, and services offered.

Global Perspectives in Higher Education: Turkey

This course is designed to provide graduate students with an opportunity to examine Turkey's higher education system and to discover and analyze similarities and differences in comparison to higher education in the United States and other countries. The course will focus on Turkey's ancient and very recent university traditions. Turkey has several institutions of higher learning, which date back more than 500 years, and has seen rapid development and expansion among universities in the last few decades. Changes in national law in 1981 permitted the establishment of private non-profit universities. Today, there are 102 public universities and 52 private universities, several which are internationally ranked, all under the jurisdiction of central policy agencies and a national testing and admissions system.

Global Soundscapes: A Survey of Musical Traditions

An introduction to selected musical sounds and practices from cultural groups around the world. Through exposure to distinct musical cultures, from traditional to transnational, students define and apply musical concepts such as rhythm, timbre, melody, and form. Socio-cultural contexts are also examined, touching on issues such as race, gender, embodied participation, technologies of production and circulation, and relationship to religion, the state, and other social structures. This course does not count towards graduate degree requirements.

Globalization and Education

The course examines the conceptual and empirical work on the social, cultural, and economic aspects of globalization and their implications for education. We shall explore education in light of: 1) the increasing de-territorialization of cultural formations; 2) the emergence of global markets along with the post-nationalization of the production and distribution of goods and services -- with a concomitant premiss on knowledge -- intensive work; 3) new information and communication technologies which are reshaping the structure and meaning of work, belonging and community; 4) unprecedented population movements and worldwide immigration. We shall examine recent conceptual work, in globalization and its relationships to human experience with a focus on youth.

This course examines how gender and sexuality are being reconfigured in the context of globalization and transnational flows.
