Student Experience

Applied Psychology

APUG Programming

The APUG Program uses a partnership model with the community to support our students’ learning and engagement in understanding and supporting diverse social issues. The curriculum provides our students access to participate actively in the community through fieldwork placements in schools, social service agencies, psychiatric hospitals, legal clinics, and youth centers, as well as the ability to engage in research opportunities to address social problems.

Each semester, the advisors and student organizations within APUG invite individuals and organizations from the community to connect with our undergraduate students, raising awareness on various social issues, and providing them with opportunities to engage in service work. Programming provided by the APUG Advisors has included a Social Activism Series which focused on strengthening APUG students' competencies in the areas of sexual assault/harassment, power and privilege, destigmatizing mental health, and critical consciousness in psychology, as well as a Creative Arts Mental Health Series that explored the intersection of the arts and psychology through workshops, film screenings, and professionals who use art and music to support positive wellness outcomes within the community.

A hallmark of APUG Student Club's community service efforts has been the biannual Midnight Run community service event. Midnight Run is a nonprofit organization that delivers meals and clothing items to individuals currently experiencing homelessness in NYC. Each semester, the APUG Club collaborates with the Midnight Run organization to meal prep with other undergraduate students and deliver meals in the evening around the NYC area. Prior to the Midnight Run events, the APUG Club hosts a donation drive for clothing, toiletry items, and menstrual care products for redistribution. APUG Club provides a forum for community student members to engage in thoughtful discussions around topics of mental health and wellness, social justice, and advocacy to enact positive, mindful, and sustainable change within our local and global communities.
