Global Public Health (GPH) for undergraduate students will expose you to the global nature of the field, emphasizing the ways in which populations and environments interact across the globe to shape health outcomes. As an GPH student you will gain fluency in the key approaches and current issues in the field of public health, both in the United States and throughout the world.

GPH builds on the global reach of NYU’s unique global network, draws strength from the entrepreneurial spirit of NYU’s talented faculty and students, and serves as a conduit for groundbreaking research and education that advances and promotes equitable health for all.

GPH is not a stand-alone major; rather it is a combined major benefitting from advisors from your home school and across the University. This unique structure responds to the ever-increasing demand for interdisciplinary public health practitioners in the US and globally.

In your first and second years, you will take liberal arts courses and core Applied Psychology and GPH courses. In your junior and senior years, you typically focus on developing research skills and exploring more advanced courses in both disciplines. With the help of your academic advisors, you will select a sequence of courses that satisfy program and degree requirements, while simultaneously exploring intellectual and professional areas of interest.

You will also complete the Seminar in Applied Psychology sequence that guides you in application of knowledge gained in the classroom to research and community-based experiences. This course work is combined with experiential learning in GPH and study away requirements to ensure you are uniquely prepared for a variety of careers.

A combined major in Applied Psychology/Global Public Health will prepare you for entry-level research and professional positions in nonprofit and government organizations, social service agencies, hospitals, universities, and international health service settings. If you choose to continue your studies after graduation, you will be prepared to pursue graduate programs across all subfields of psychology, as well as in related disciplines including public health, education, social work, sociology, intervention and prevention, medicine, law, and business.

Program Benefits for International Students

If you’re an international student, you may be able to work in the United States after graduation for an extended period of time. Most students studying on F-1 visas will be eligible for 12 months of Optional Practical Training (OPT) off-campus work authorization. F-1 students in our program may also be eligible for the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics) OPT extension, allowing you to extend your time in the United States to pursue degree-related work experience for a total of 36 months or 3 years. For more information on who can apply for this extension visit NYU’s Office of Global Services: STEM OPT.
