Evaluating the Outcomes of Border Crossers

About Border Crossers 

Border Crossers aims to disrupt racism at the school and community level by empowering educators through professional development, training, and coaching. The programming is designed to help educators deconstruct racism in the classroom. This includes a focus on the social construct of race, exploring the ways in which racism manifests in education, and practicing strategies that disrupt racism through short- and long-term actions. 

About Our Study

The Research Alliance is conducting a three-year mixed-method evaluation of Border Crossers in New York City. By examining the outcomes of participating in Border Crossers’ training—including the extent to which the organization’s tools appear to disrupt racism at the school and classroom level—this study contributes to a growing body research on equity in education and addressing racial injustice in the classroom.

The study uses an equity lens to examine the outcomes of Border Crossers’ core programming–Talking About Race in the Classroom (TAR)–and to conduct a formative evaluation of the organization’s Racial Justice in Schools Cohort Initiative (RJS).    

This study’s goals include:

  • Building Border Crossers’ internal evaluation capacity by creating detailed logic models and theories of action for each program, expanding on existing evaluation tools, and creating tracking systems.  
  • Evaluating the programs by providing in-depth documentation of program activities, examining the quality of implementation, and assessing the outcomes of Border Crossers’ programs for participating educators and schools.
  • Providing evidence-based recommendations to inform the design, implementation, replication, and scale-up of Border Crossers’ programs.   

We expect these findings will also suggest valuable lessons and insights for other programs that focus on disrupting systemic injustice and racism in education.
