Are the prices the same to attend the remote version of the conference?

Yes. Conference registration fees will remain the same, in order to cover the costs of personnel and technical staff necessary to produce the conference as envisioned.

I live in a different timezone from New York City. Will I still be able to participate?

In order to make the conference as accessible to as many time zones as possible, we have condensed all conference proceedings to occur approximately between the hours of 1:00pm and 6:00pm EST.

What is a typical daily schedule now that everything is remote?

We will publish versions of the daily schedule as soon as we can.

How are you operating remotely?

We will be using Zoom, a remote conferencing tool. Zoom is also the only reliable, ubiquitous, platform that allows for significant sound reproduction. NYU Staff are fully prepared to facilitate all aspects of the conference with excellent musical fidelity.

What if I don’t know how to use Zoom?

As NYU has transitioned to fully remote proceedings, we have refined the process for how to train efficiently, starting with some training videos.  To that end, we plan to hold small training sessions ahead of the conference to ensure that everyone feels adequately prepared and able to enjoy the conference (how the sessions will work, virtual hand raising, structure of the Q&A, microphone muting, etc.)

If you have specific questions about how to accomplish a part of your presentation on Zoom, feel free to be in touch with us far in advance of the conference by emailing mamiconference@nyu.edu

Is there anything I need to know about giving my paper remotely?

In order to streamline the conference proceedings NYU will handle any keynote/powerpoint aspects of the presentation remotely via zoom, so all you have to do is focus on giving your papers until the Q&A. You will send your video examples and powerpoint to us ahead of time.  If anyone feels very strongly, we will also offer the option to record your entire presentation as a video that NYU can run, and then join us live for the Q&A portion.

What if my internet goes out or something else goes wrong with Zoom during the conference?

NYU staff will have tech support available remotely throughout the conference day to test and troubleshoot any issues that may arise. We have plans in place for secure connections and backup plans should something go wrong.

Are you sure Zoom is a secure platform?

To maintain security, every aspect of Zoom will be within a closed, password-protected environment — which will thwart the ‘ZOOM-BOMBING’ and hacking that already plagues publicly-attended Zoom panels and webinars.

One of my favorite parts about the conference was connecting with colleagues informally over coffee or dinners.  Can that happen remotely?

We are actively pursuing ways of retaining this aspect of our conference. Of course it will not be quite the same as the conversations over New York Pizza, but we are cautiously excited by some of the possibilities that are emerging. We will be in touch with more details as they develop. If you have ideas, don’t hesitate to be in touch!
