PhD in Educational Theatre in Colleges and Communities

The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Educational Theatre in Colleges and Communities is a 54–60-point program that prepares students for careers as scholars and academics in Educational Theatre. The program provides specific pathways for specialized study at the doctoral level in three areas of educational theatre praxis: Drama in Education, Applied Theatre, and Theatre for Young Audiences and Play Production.

Target Audience

The PhD in Educational Theatre is designed for individuals who intend to pursue positions as academics, researchers, scholars, curriculum developers, and educational consultants. Graduates of our program are teachers of drama education and theatre at colleges and universities across the country and around the world.

Program Goals

Through a broadly designed and individualized curriculum, students in the PhD in Educational Theatre will develop their artistic praxis needed to transform today’s learning communities in a variety of educational, cultural, and vocational contexts.

The PhD program provides comprehensive research and artistic training that equips graduates with the knowledge and skills to have significant impact on scholarship in educational theatre.

General degree requirements include foundations in education, cognate study (that is, elective coursework related to and supportive of the area of specialization, but from outside of the program), research electives, and coursework in a specialized research methodology.

In particular, students will develop authority through 18 points of coursework in one of three areas of specialization:

  • Drama in Education (i.e., studies in drama/theatre curriculum, special education, integrated arts, assessment and evaluation)
  • Applied Theatre (i.e., studies in community-based theatre, theatre of the oppressed, the teaching artist, diversity and inclusion)
  • Theatre for Young Audiences and Play Production (i.e., studies in acting, directing, dramaturgy, playwriting, dramatic literature, arts-based research methodologies)

As a culminating study, students design and conduct a dissertation study under the direction of doctoral program faculty and are encouraged to complete their program in five years.

Academic and Co-curricular Opportunities

Working with premier faculty in the field, students in the PhD conduct cutting-edge and innovative research that addresses the most pressing questions in the cultural and educational arenas. The program offers personal mentoring and advisement from doctoral faculty in the Program in Educational Theatre, as well as from the larger Department of Music and Performing Arts Professions; the Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development; and other Schools at NYU that have resonance with interdisciplinary, practitioner-led, and arts-based research modalities.

Students in the PhD program have the opportunity to participate fully in all Educational Theatre programming, including:

  • Study abroad programs in Puerto Rico, London, and Dublin
  • Main stage productions in our Blackbox Theatre and the historic Provincetown Playhouse
  • Student productions
  • Annual conferences related to the program’s areas of specialization

Additionally, PhD students have access to school-wide grants and funds for doctoral student travel, conference participation, and research.

Degree Details

How to Apply

A strong research focus exists in the program in Educational Theatre. Applications for the PhD in Educational Theatre are accepted from candidates with clearly demonstrated interest in research and scholarship. Students are encouraged to complete their program in five years. A satisfactorily completed master’s degree with a research component is expected prior to application.

Acceptance into doctoral study is competitive as we offer a funding program for full-time PhD students that supports tuition and living expenses. Applicants may also apply for part-time study which is not funded, though this is no less competitive than the full-time program.
