Research Description/Bio: Imani Wilson is a doctoral student in the Sociology of Education program. She received her Bachelor of Science in Psychology and Sociology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2019.
Born and raised in Chicago, Imani has experience working with youth in classrooms and out-of-school settings and serving as a community organizer. Her research examines the function, creation, and sustainability of Black community-based educational spaces that serve as sites of empowerment and resistance for Black youth. She hopes to utilize historical, abolitionist, and Black studies approaches to construct this research.
Additionally, Imani works as a Research Assistant at the NYU Metro Center for Research on Equity and the Transformation of Schools. She also serves as the Graduate Student Coordinator for the Race and Public Space Working Group through NYU's Institute for Public Knowledge. In her free time, Imani enjoys exploring the city, trying new foods, and attending local art and music events.
