Steinhardt Outstanding Faculty Mentor Award

The Steinhardt Outstanding Faculty Mentor Award is awarded to a Steinhardt full-time faculty member who excels in formal and/or informal mentoring of other faculty members. The winning mentor receives a $1,000 prize and certificate of recognition.

AY 2025-2026 Winner

Award Guidelines

  • Open to current full-time tenured/tenure-track and continuing contract faculty 
  • Minimum of ten years of continuous full-time service at Steinhardt. Service as visiting faculty can count as part of the minimum
  • A record of outstanding and impactful mentorship of Steinhardt faculty
  • (May also include outstanding and impactful mentorship of faculty at other institutions)
  • Mentorship may focus on enhancing teaching, research, leadership, and/or professional growth across all stages of career
  • Excellent mentorship may mean different things to different mentees.  They may include:
    • Showing empathy, respect, and enthusiasm
    • Providing constructive feedback
    • Demonstrating strong listening and communication skills
    • Openness to sharing experiences and knowledge
    • Fostering collegiality and community
    • Commitment to a mentee’s long-term growth
    • And much more!  
  • The Vice Dean for Faculty appoints the Outstanding Faculty Mentor Award Committee.
  • The Faculty Affairs team announces the award via email to solicit nominations from Steinhardt’s full-time faculty.  A nominating faculty mentee will submit a letter (up to 2 pages maximum) nominating a Steinhardt full-time faculty member who has served as their mentor. The letter should detail the nominated mentor’s contributions to mentorship of the nominee and its impact. The letter may also include reference to wider faculty mentorship activities, if desired and applicable.
  • Nominated mentors are notified of nomination and will be asked to provide a statement (maximum 2 pages) describing their faculty mentorship activities (that is mentoring of other faculty), formal and informal. Nominated mentors may also wish to describe their approach to mentorship, what they have learned about mentorship, and/or what faculty mentorship means to them, within the page limit.
  • No supplementary materials will be accepted in this first pilot year. 
  • The Outstanding Faculty Mentor Award Committee reviews the two documents and presents their recommendation to the Vice Dean for Faculty and/or Dean based on the eligibility requirements and criteria outlined above.

Steinhardt Teaching Excellence Award

The Steinhardt Teaching Excellence Award is awarded to full-time faculty members who demonstrate teaching excellence. The award winners receive a $1,000 prize and certificate of recognition.

A Steinhardt Teaching Excellence Award and $1,000 prize is also awarded to NYU Steinhardt adjunct faculty members who have exemplified teaching excellence.

Award Guidelines

  • Open to current full-time tenured/tenure-track and continuing contract faculty as well as current part-time adjunct faculty
  • Minimum of five years of continuous teaching at Steinhardt. Service as visiting faculty can count as part of the minimum
  • Adjuncts teaching courses in both Steinhardt and other NYU schools are eligible for the the adjunct award, except if a formal affiliation with another school exists
  • Not open to research associates, visiting faculty, or faculty who received the award within the past five years
  • A record of outstanding teaching effectiveness both within and outside the classroom
  • The ability to inspire, promote, and sustain the intellectual development of students
  • An innovative pedagogical approach (new techniques using current or new models of teaching) that is intellectually rigorous, creative, and engaging  
  • Demonstrated scholarly/professional contributions and their integration into the classroom that fosters critical thinking and challenges students to an independent inquiry
  • Advising/mentoring undergraduate and graduate students and clinical supervising interactions outside of the classroom, where applicable
  • Contribution to developing or enhancing curricula in the field
  • Length of service (minimum of five years of teaching at Steinhardt)
  • Internal school awards/honors received
  • The Vice Dean for Faculty Affairs appoints the Teaching Awards Committee (TAC) comprised of full-time tenured/tenure-track faculty, continuing contract faculty, and students
  • The TAC solicits nominations from Steinhardt faculty, students, and administrators
  • Faculty are notified of nomination and will be asked to provide the following items:
    • Teaching Philosophy Statement
    • CV
    • Syllabi for all courses taught in the last four semesters
    • Student/Alumni Letters of Support
    • Colleague letters of support.
  • The TAC reviews the nominee’s packet and presents their recommendations to the Vice Dean for Faculty Affairs based on the eligibility requirements and criteria outlined above

University Distinguished Teaching Award
