MM, Instrumental Performance (Brass Studies)

Prepare for your career as a professional brass performer in a uniquely creative, inclusive environment. In NYU Steinhardt’s unparalleled facilities, you’ll study with world-renowned artist faculty, exploring diverse musical traditions in concert music, contemporary musics, and jazz. In the context of our uniquely flexible curriculum, you'll increase the breadth of your repertoire and the depth of your knowledge, working closely with faculty mentors and engaging with your peers across programs such as Instrumental Performance, Vocal Performance, Jazz, Composition, and Music Technology.

Core Course Sequence

In NYU’s unparalleled facilities, you’ll prepare for a career as a successful performing and recording artist. While developing your technique and musicianship, you’ll be mentored by dedicated educators, internationally acclaimed artists, and respected commercial, symphonic, and chamber performers at the top of their fields. 

Our flexible curriculum offers unique opportunities for you to refine your craft. As a graduate student in our program, you’ll work one-on-one with dedicated faculty mentors. You'll have myriad performance opportunities, engaging with the NYU Brass Choir, brass quintets, quartets, trios, and mixed ensembles. The NYU Symphony, NYU Broadway Orchestra, and NYU Contemporary Music Ensemble are just a few of the performing groups open to graduate students. Additional orchestral experiences are available through our fully staged opera and music theatre productions, studio recordings,, and screen scoring projects, directed by leading industry professionals. 

Through your peers and faculty, you’ll access a powerful professional network of active musicians, entrepreneurs, and composers, opening career opportunities to you that extend beyond graduation.

Culminating Experience

You will present a solo master's recital in your final semester. The recital experience includes a research component that examines performance practice from musicological, historical, or interdisciplinary perspectives.
