The 128-credit BS in Teaching English, Grades 7-12 (Initial Certification) provides you with a comprehensive understanding of literature and composition. The program covers areas including composition and literature, theories of language and literature, and teaching methods. Additionally, supervised student teaching placements in NYC schools offer practical experience. You’ll gain a deeper understanding of language, composition, and literature while developing skills in reflective teaching for middle and high school.

Core Course Sequence

This program's coursework is comprehensive, covering a wide range of areas, including the NYU CORE, foundational classes in education and education policy, pedagogical content for English (including linguistics, composition, poetry, and literature ), and English education (including learning, historical and sociological foundations of education, and instruction methods). The program of study culminates in two semesters of teaching in a public school middle and high school setting.
