To best meet the needs of our students, we have streamlined our teaching degree structure and suspended enrollment in Bachelor of Science in Teaching Mathematics. We now offer a unified Bachelor of Science in Teaching Adolescents with specialized concentrations designed around your field of interest.
Teach middle and high school students the mathematical skills they need for success. You’ll build a strong foundation of mathematics, learn pedagogical strategies, and gain hands-on experience through supervised student teaching placements at New York City public middle and high schools. Upon graduation, you’ll be eligible for initial teaching certification in Teaching Mathematics, grades 7–12, in New York State.
You’ll take liberal arts, mathematics, and computer science courses in NYU's College of Arts and Science, and teaching methods and curriculum courses at NYU Steinhardt. Throughout your course work, you will learn:
We also offer a dual degree so you can earn a Mathematics BA from NYU’s College of Arts and Science and an MA in Teaching Mathematics from NYU Steinhardt in only five years. Learn more about the dual-degree option.
In your junior year, you will visit schools and observe practicing teachers in the classroom. In your senior year, you'll complete two semesters of student teaching in a public middle school and a public high school affiliated with our program, under the supervision of experienced mathematics teachers and our own faculty.
Study current developments in mathematics teaching as a context for reflecting on and thinking critically about your own teaching practice. Our curriculum integrates the latest recommendations from mathematics teaching organizations and national commissions on ways to improve mathematics education.
Special resources available to you in the program include the internationally renowned NYU Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences, and the University’s numerous microcomputer centers. You'll be a part of a strong, supportive learning community and work with a range of students preparing to teach other secondary school subjects.
This program leads to eligibility for initial teaching certification in Teaching Mathematics, grades 7–12, in New York State. You’ll also be qualified to teach mathematics in grades 5 and 6, and be ready to take on careers such as:
