Welcome Reception for New Doctoral Students

Steinhardt's New Doctoral Student Welcome reception takes place at the start of each fall semester for that year’s entry class. It is an opportunity to meet some of our faculty and staff, and to make connections with other new doctoral students.

First Fridays Doctoral Colloquium

First Fridays meetings for Steinhardt doctoral students are held on the first Friday of each month throughout the academic year. The focus of each meeting will be emailed to all doctoral students in advance of the meeting date. There is no formal registration for First Fridays, but we do ask that you reply to the email to RSVP.

The scheduled meeting dates for First Fridays for academic year 2021-2022 are:

  • Friday, December 3, 2021
  • Friday, February 4, 2022
  • Friday, March 4, 2022
  • Friday, April 1, 2022

Final Oral Examination Filing Deadlines

The deadlines below are for filing for final oral examination. Please discuss your anticipated final oral examination date and dissertation filing date with your committee chairperson and members well in advance of the deadlines listed here. Find instructions on the procedures for filing your dissertation as well as required forms. Each deadline date below corresponds to one of the three degree conferral dates (January, May, or September). You will also need to apply for graduation on Albert in accordance with their Graduation Deadlines.

Note: Until further notice, all final oral examinations are being held as Zoom meetings. Also note that we will be as flexible as possible with the deadlines and examination periods outlined above until the University resumes normal operations.

Dissertation Format Workshops

If you are planning to file your dissertation on the next deadline and would like to attend a Dissertation Format Workshop, please email Nancy Hall at or call us at 212-998-5044.

The Dissertation Format Workshops are for students who have questions about preparing the dissertation according to the format requirements outlined in the Dissertation Format section of this site. We will also go over the procedures for filing dissertations and scheduling the final oral exam. You should bring a draft of your dissertation or the section you would like to review. Please note that this workshop is for format only and we will not be discussing dissertation content.

Upcoming workshop dates and times will be posted here when available. If no workshops are scheduled prior to your dissertation filing date and you would like to go over your format, please contact Nancy Hall at for an appointment.

Doctoral Convocation

In addition to the University's Commencement ceremony (which includes all schools and all degrees), the Steinhardt School holds a graduation ceremony for doctoral graduates each May. We encourage our doctoral graduates to attend this convocation and doctoral hooding ceremony.

September, January, and May doctoral graduates will be invited to attend the Doctoral Convocation ceremony in May. Invitations will be sent to eligible candidates in late March.
