APSY-GE 2661 Foundations of Counseling for Mental Health and Wellness 3 Credits
Interventions aimed at ameliorating mental illness & promoting wellness are examined. Integration of research & treatment models that consider mental health well-being in terms of pathology with models of wellness broadly conceived as optimal psychological & physical development. The meanings of “wellness,” “health,” & “illness” across lines of identity (e.g. ethnicity, culture, gender, sexuality, class, & age) are explored. Pathological outcomes (e.g., depression, anxiety, psychosis) are examined in tandem with such constructs as resilience, hope, wisdom, & spirituality, & considered at the individual, interpersonal, & community level.

INTE-UE 13 Foundations of Human Rights Education
Internationally, communities approach the idea of human rights (HR) though many histories, traditions, and values. This course studies those differences and returns to the foundational questions of contemporary HR, asking: “what do we owe one another and how do we express and share those values and obligations?” Through this course students shall: 1) become more familiar with the history of HR and associated educational projects, 2) gain familiarity with the theoretical foundations of the same, and 3) become adept in the use of both as tools in the service of wider international and domestic educational goals.

This course examines theoretical lenses from the learning sciences, including constructivism, constructionism, socio-constructivism, situativity, and cultural-context frameworks—and applies them to analyze real-world learning environments. Through weekly readings, collaborative reading annotations, in-class activities, and a semester-long field observation project, students bridge theory and practice, and develop skills in evaluating and designing learning experiences across material, social, and cultural contexts.

This course will include further study of the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) symbols as they apply to the French language and the rules for lyrical pronunciation of French. In this course we will cover the varieties of Italian food in their past and present forms. First, we will explore the history of food from past civilizations, leading up to World War I, just after the great immigration to the New World. Time periods examined will be ancient Rome, Medieval, Renaissance, Risorgimento, leading to the modern era. This course includes topics ranging from Pellegrino Artusi’s famous cookbook in the contest of Italian unification to the relationship between Italian Futurism and food. The second part of the course will introduce students to the regional diversity of Italian food using mediums such as TV, art, and film. We will examine the ways in which food shapes contemporary Italian society, from the more intimate family kitchen to the most elegant Italian restaurant in New York City.
