NYU Steinhardt Hosts A Conversation with Richard Carranza, NYC Schools Chancellor

Richard Carranza, chancellor of the New York City Department of Education (DOE), was the guest speaker at NYU Steinhardt’s Leadership Lens Series on October 17th. In a conversation with Lisette Nieves, the chancellor answered questions that ranged from information about the songs on his playlist (“mostly Mariachi”), to what he likes to see in a classroom (“curiosity and inspiration, rather than law and order“).

Lifting As You Climb: An Interview with Jemar Bather (MS ’18), Applied Statistics

Jemar Bather is a biostatistics doctoral student and a HIV/AIDS Training Grant Fellow at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. After earning a master’s degree from NYU Steinhardt’s Program in Applied Statistics for Social Science Research, he served as a research assistant in the Department of Biostatistics at the NYU College of Global Public Health, where he built statistical models to address health disparities in breast cancer, obesity, health literacy, and patient decision-making.

Natasha Strassfeld is an assistant professor of special education in Steinhardt’s Department of Teaching and Learning. Strassfeld’s research examines service delivery to parents and students with disabilities in the special education services and accommodations process, minority disproportionate representation, special education policy and law, and juvenile justice.

Black Drivers More Likely to Be Stopped Finds Study Co-authored by NYU Steinhardt Researcher

A new study titled, “A large-scale analysis of racial disparities in police stops across the United States,” found that in a dataset of nearly 100 million traffic stops across the United States, black drivers were about 20 percent more likely to be stopped than white drivers relative to their share of the residential population.
