We are planning to run this program in-person for summer 2022; however, we must remain flexible in our response to COVID-19 developments. The health and safety of our students, faculty, and staff are our primary concerns, so remote workshops may be a necessary alternative. This page will be updated as soon as guidance from NYU central is available.
Gender-based eligibility requirements are set by our funding partner, Girls, Inc.
The Girls Electronic Music Stars (GEMS) summer program is designed to educate and empower the new generation in an inclusive environment that breaks down barriers that have historically led to the underrepresentation of women and minorities in technology and engineering. GEMS is designed for students 10-12 years old. This program explores some of the amazing opportunities for expression, learning and fun that are available in music and technology. The focus will be on electronic music, studio recording and performance, collaborative circuit making, interactive programming, and improvising/playing music with technology. This is a 1-week seminar that runs 9am to 3pm. All activities are planned at the NYU Steinhardt Music Technology facilities and studios, supplemented by local field trips.
