From Classroom Dialogue to Global Health Leadership
Andre Christie begins most mornings in the hospital before the sun rises. As a fourth-year medical student and Master of Public Health candidate, he moves between patient rooms, public health data, and conversations about systems of care. The work spans both individual treatment and the broader conditions that shape how care is delivered.
That sense of purpose did not emerge in a straight line. Before earning his Bachelor’s degree in Applied Psychology at NYU Steinhardt in 2018, Andre’s path moved through dietetics and nutrition at Bronx Community College and early roles in health education. He had already worked in HIV prevention in Jamaica and participated in research experiences across the United States and South Africa. These experiences made his interest in health equity clear, but he did not yet know how he wanted to contribute.
A Broader Social Perspective
Within APUG, that question sharpened. In Cultural Psychology, a class discussion about access to healthcare became a defining moment. Andre had recently returned from work in Africa, focused on maternal health and healthcare delivery systems.
Having witnessed firsthand the structural and resource limitations that affect care in different regions, I found myself reflecting deeply on the contrast between expectations and realities across contexts."
Though personal and challenging, the conversation was respectful and meaningful. It asked students to hold multiple truths at once and created space for critical reflection. For Andre, it clarified that psychology could not be separated from culture, policy, and systems. Health was not only biological. It was social.
That insight became the pivot.
After graduating from NYU, Andre continued teaching at Bronx Community College while deepening his clinical training. Today, as an MD and MPH candidate, he brings a broader social perspective to both clinical care and research. His work on maternal mortality and health system performance reflects a focus on structural conditions that produce adverse outcomes, an approach that traces directly back to the questions he began asking in APUG.
Follow What You Cannot Ignore
APUG gave him language and a framework for connecting lived experience, cultural context, and structural analysis. It reinforced the idea that asking difficult questions about equity is not a distraction from clinical excellence but is central to it.
For prospective students, Andre’s journey offers a quiet reassurance. Purpose does not always arrive fully formed. Sometimes it is revealed in a classroom discussion that feels personal, in a tension you cannot ignore, or in a path that bends before it becomes clear. At NYU Steinhardt Applied Psychology, those moments are not incidental. They are the beginning of transformation.
