This unique major and co-major combines foundational knowledge of normal and disordered speech, language, and hearing processes with an investigation of the ways interactions between populations and environments shape global public health outcomes. The degree is designed to respond to increasing demand for interdisciplinary public health practitioners in the US and abroad.

Official Degree Title
After successfully completing this major/co-major, you will be able to:
- Recognize key historical milestones in the development and evolution of the field of public health with both US and international examples
- Apply interdisciplinary approaches and methodologies to explore biological, social, environmental, and structural aspects of health
- Compare health systems and policy in high-, middle-, and low-income countries
- Apply concepts of public health promotion and disease and injury prevention to engage in collaborative and culturally-relevant public health activities that, in turn, promote social justice
- Connect public health concepts to disciplinary training in the field of communicative sciences and disorders
- Describe basic human communication and swallowing processes, including their biological, neurological, and acoustic bases in children and adults
- Explain the development of speech and language skills, including cultural influences on basic human communication and changes across the lifespan
- Discuss principles and methods of prevention, assessment, and intervention for individuals with communication disorders
As our student, you will receive a rigorous liberal arts education spanning introductory study of the humanities, social sciences, science, and quantitative reasoning (especially biostatistics). Taking courses from faculty in the NYU Steinhardt Department of Communicative Sciences and Disorders and the NYU School of Global Public Health, you will gain hands-on exposure to both disciplines through a combination of core courses, fieldwork experience, and electives tailored to your personal interests.
This degree emphasizes global perspectives – your course work will include foreign language classes and at least one semester abroad, typically in the Fall semester of your junior year.
Please note: The Global Public Health co-major is not a standalone major and must be combined with a degree-granting bachelor's program within CAS, GLS, Meyers, Silver, or Steinhardt.
This major/co-major is appropriate for students considering careers and/or further study in
communicative sciences and disorders, public health, or public administration. You will be well positioned to pursue entry-level roles in government, nonprofits, consulting, schools, advocacy organizations, and international health services and programs. Possible positions include:
- Health educator
- Community outreach worker
- Health communications/marketing writer
- Research assistant
- Peace Corps or AmeriCorps volunteer
