Two NYU Steinhardt Faculty Named Top Education Scholars

Posted

Two NYU Steinhardt faculty were named top education scholars by the 2023 RHSU Edu-Scholar Rankings.

Courtney Sale Ross Professor of Globalization and Education Hirokazu Yoshikawa moved up ten spots to appear at #51, while Associate Professor of Applied Psychology Joshua Aronson appeared at #107.

The RHSU Edu-Scholar Rankings spotlight the top 200 education scholars out of nearly 20,000 university-based faculty tackling educational questions in the United States. The Rankings include a particular focus on highlighting individuals who move ideas from academic journals into public discussions of education.

“One small way to encourage academics to step into the fray and revisit academic norms is, I think, by doing more to recognize and value those scholars who engage in public discourse,” explains Rick Hess, who uses nine evaluation metrics to create the rankings. At NYU Steinhardt, the School-wide emphasis on social impact and faculty thought leadership uniquely positions faculty to inform educational conversations nationwide.

Aronson directs the Mindful Education Lab, a group of psychologists and neuroscientists dedicated to using research to evaluate the psychological and neurological effects of mindfulness on student learning, teacher effectiveness, and school and classroom climate. President Joe Biden recently appointed Yoshikawa to serve on the National Board for Education Sciences, which seeks to provide unbiased, reliable, and useful information about the condition and progress of education in the United States.

“As the 2023 RHSU Edu-Scholar Rankings reflect, Aronson and Yoshikawa have seized the opportunity to have an impact on education policy and discourse, both within the academy and beyond,” says Jack H. Knott, Gale and Ira Drukier Dean of NYU Steinhardt. “We salute their excellence and applaud their continued commitment to shaping these conversations.”
