Female entrepreneurs in the health industry discussed innovations that are bettering the lives of parents and childcare providers.
On April 11, female entrepreneurs from NYU Steinhardt joined together for a virtual event called “Creating a New Paradigm: Women Who Are Reinventing Parenting and Maternal Healthcare.” The event was hosted by The Female Quotient, and panelists discussed the impactful changes they’re making across the health industry.
Women alumni and faculty throughout Steinhardt are taking the lead in identifying and creating solutions needed to augment and better the lives of parents and childcare providers. These solutions include developing innovations that reimagine postpartum care, breastfeeding apparel, early child development, parent coaching, and more. Panelists for the event included:
- Caroline Dettman, chief marketing and creative officer at The Female Quotient, which strategically partners with the largest companies in the world to advance equality in the workplace
- Jade Kearney (MA ’20), co-founder and CEO of She Matters, Inc., a digital health platform designed to reduce maternal morbidity through cultural competency and technology
- Betsy Riley (BS ’09), co-founder of Swehl, which offers streamlined tools, inclusive education, and a safe community around the breastfeeding experience
- Natalie Hiromi Brito, associate professor of applied psychology at Steinhardt and director of the Infant Studies of Language and Neurocognitive Development (ISLAND) Lab, which studies the impact of the home environment and early social interactions on children's brain and behavioral development
- Erin O’Connor, professor of education at Steinhardt and chief of education at Cooper, an online parenting homebase with support, community, and content guided by research-backed expertise
During the event, these experts discussed being a mother while running a business, maternal health disparities, higher education’s role in researching maternal and infant health, and getting non-parents and men involved in equity efforts. As Riley put it, “Were you born? Then this matters to you.”
