Intensive, Hands-On Study in Music Education

Pursue a career as an innovative music educator, working in schools, communities, colleges, and universities. In this master of arts program, you will build on your background in music or music education, perform and study with leading New York City performers and artist-teachers, and complete one semester of practical training in music education.

This degree does not lead to teaching certification. A degree leading to eligibility for initial teaching certification in Music Education is also avilable, as well as a post-master's advanced certificate.

How You'll Learn

Music Pedagogy and Content 
The curriculum for this graduate degree combines intensive study in music education with pedagogy, music specialization coursework, and electives in research and praxis. 

Curricular Practical Training
You'll gain valuable experience through completing one semester of fieldwork at a New York City-based community setting.

Performance Opportunities
You'll have opportunities to participate in a variety of performing ensembles and chamber groups directed by top New York artists. 

Dual Degree Option: BM Music Performance/MA Music Education

We also offer a dual degree that allows you to earn a bachelor of music in composition or performance and a master of arts in music education in only five years. You can take courses towards your graduate degree during your junior and senior years, then complete the MA in one additional year of study, becoming eligible for New York State initial certification as a teacher of music, grades K-12. Advanced Certificate Program: Professional Studies in Music

Through our post-master's advanced certificate you will be able to take advanced classes in music education and elective courses in music performance, composition, music technology, music business, or any other program in the Department of Music and Performing Arts Professions.

This advanced certificate program, which takes 18-24 credits to complete, will allow you to combine intensive study in music education and pedagogy with performance opportunities or private study in instrumental performance.
