The International Education Student Board (IESB) is a board of International Education graduate students who are committed to creating both social and professional events for the International Education student body. Olivia Davis, President
Olivia is a 2nd year IE student from St. Louis, Missouri. She graduated from the University of Missouri with a BA in Sociology and minors in History and Psychology. After graduating into a job market impacted by the Covid-19 Pandemic, she decided to become an Au Pair in Munich, Germany. This experience sparked a passion for international education and curiosity for how different children across the world learn. When she returned to the States, her next step was to fulfill a lifelong dream of moving to NYC. She became a Nanny and saw a whole new perspective on education. As a graduate student in the International Education program, she hopes to learn about education all around the world and wants to reimagine what the education system can look like in America.
Josephine Au Bwae, Vice President
Josephine is a first year IE student, originally from Yangon, Myanmar. She graduated from Colby College in Waterville, ME, with a BA in Educational Studies. She is currently on Comparative and International Education Policy and Practice track in the IE program. Her research interests are refugee education, education and immigration and education in conflict affected contexts. She is currently working part time at the office of Global Services at NYU and interning as an Editorial Assistant at the Journal of Education in Emergencies (JEiE). Josephine loves watching sitcoms and rewatching Hamilton the musical over and over again (on Disney plus) in her free time.
Laura Rapp, Secretary
Laura is originally from Beloit, WI, and she is in her first year of the International Education master’s program at NYU Steinhardt. She graduated from Macalester College with a double major in Spanish Language/Culture and Linguistics. Laura was drawn to international education because she’s interested in the way migration and immigration affect education practice and policy and how cross-cultural experiences can create greater empathy and understanding across global communities. She is thrilled to be part of the IESB team and is looking forward to connecting with other IE students, faculty, and community members! Outside of school, Laura enjoys running, going to live music concerts (especially jazz), and trying coffee shops.
Ashly Huerta, Treasurer
Ashly Huerta is a second-year Master’s of International Education student at NYU Steinhardt. She has been a member of IESB for one year and formerly served as a secretary and now currently serves as treasurer. She is a native New Yorker who loves travel, crafting, and spending time with her dog, Bella. Ashly is excited to connect with new IE members and have fun at events!
Yifan Qiao, Communications Chair
Yifan Qiao is a first-year master's student in International Education at NYU Steinhardt. She joined IESB this year and is excited to meet everyone! She is from Henan, China. She is passionate about international education because she wants to promote cross-cultural understanding and create greater educational opportunities for those in need. In her free time, she enjoys swimming, visiting museums and spending time in nature.
Kaitlyn Turner, Events Coordinator
Kaitlyn Turner is a graduate student pursuing a master’s degree in International Education. Born and raised in Utah, she loves being outside and exploring the world around her. Through international education she is looking to apply her background in hospitality and tourism to support students pursuing international study opportunities. She loves to fill her free time listening to audiobooks, baking, and discovering all that NYC has to offer. She is excited to build community in the International Education department and beyond through social and academic activities.
Elections:
Board positions are held for a year. It consists of a:
President
- Spokesperson for the board
- Attends all GSO meetings, acts as liaison between GSO and the board
- Maintains communications with the faculty and board advisors
- Runs board meetings effectively by sticking to the agenda
- Delegates tasks at the end of each meeting
- Maintain communication with IE community, faculty, and the IESB board
Vice President
- Sets the agenda and shares it with board members prior to meetings
- Emails board members reminders to add to the agenda
- When President is not available, serves as ex officio at GSO meetings and board meetings
- Works closely with other board members to complete projects and tasks
- Maintain communication with IE community, faculty, and the IESB board
Secretary
- Record minutes at each meeting and share them with the board
- Maintain an ongoing document to evaluate each IESB event
- Create initial cohort interest survey
- Responsible for organizing the documents in the Shared Google Folder
- Assists other members of the board with their duties as necessary
Treasurer
- Oversees applications for GSO funding
- Responsible for tracking and managing budget expenditures and receipts
- Responsible for gathering receipts after events
- Reports current fiscal standing to the board
Communications Officer
- Maintains and updates the IESB social media and communication channels
- Designs invites and flyers for events
- Responsible for in-class announcements of board events
- Liaison to International Education study body
- Distributes announcements for newsletter to advisor
- Responsible for responding to IESB emails
- Searches out and contacts NYU groups outside the department and other organizations outside the university
- Contacts these groups and/or distributes events when relevant
Events Coordinator
- Responsible for collecting activity/event ideas from the student body and board
- Presents the logistics of the top-rated events to board members
- Delegates activity-related tasks to board members at meetings
- Follows up with board members on assignments
- Coordinates and implements all IESB-sponsored events
