Man and woman faculty talking

The Steinhardt Mentoring Program is a school-wide program to formalize individual and group mentoring that enhances the pedagogical experience and career development for all of our faculty. Mentoring continues to occur throughout the school in various formal and informal ways via departments, research centers, and other networking opportunities.

Benefits of Mentoring

Mentoring is a process whereby an experienced, highly regarded, and empathic senior faculty person (the mentor) guides the junior faculty member (the mentee) to reach their full potential through professional development and personal experiences. The multi-faceted, supportive informal and formal partnerships can make a profound difference in the lives of mentees and mentors.

There are several benefits of mentoring which include but are not limited to:

  • Creating collegiality among established and early career faculty
  • Strengthening professional relationships and building professional networks
  • Improving self-efficacy in teaching, research, and leadership

Structure of the Mentoring Program

A committee of experienced faculty members who have agreed to support this mentoring initiative. The council comprises approximately 38 faculty members who are representative of the Steinhardt faculty body and committed to serving in this capacity for two years. They will function as mentors, panelists, reviewers, or a combination during their term.

We welcome early-career scholars that have joined the Steinhardt faculty family, as well as mid-career faculty. Mentees  have an opportunity to collaborate with mentors whose role is to encourage personal and professional growth through sharing  experiences, resources and providing guidance.  Mentor- mentee pairing is decided by the Faculty Development Team of the Office of Faculty Affairs, with input from the faculty.

Under the leadership of Elisabeth King, Vice Dean for Faculty Affairs, the Faculty Development team is responsible for assisting with ongoing and new initiatives, and for distributing resources for participation in workshops and panels. In addition, the team works to ensure the implementation of best practices in providing faculty support in teaching and learning, research and creative practice, and leadership development.

Previous panels include:

  • Navigating your Path from Service to Leadership
  • Third Year, Tenure, and Promotion Review
  • Internal Funding and Networking Opportunities
  • Inclusive Teaching with Technology
  • Advancing your Research at NYU
