Prepare for Your NY State Bilingual Extension Certificate
This post-baccalaureate advanced certificate is for educators who want to extend and expand their teaching into the context of bilingual education. Through rigorous course work and field experiences, this certificate builds on your experiences in education and prepares you to work in diverse bilingual education settings.

Official Degree Title
In order to pursue this extension program, you must hold or be eligible for New York State initial teaching certificate in your primary area. After completing the program, in order to obtain the New York State Bilingual Extension Certificate, you must also pass the Bilingual Education Assessment in your target language of instruction.
Currently certified teachers in childhood, early childhood, and select middle and high school content areas may be eligible for New York State's Bilingual Extension Certificate.

How You'll Learn
This post-baccalaureate program combines core foundation classes and student teaching. You’ll study bilingual multicultural education, bilingual pedagogy and intercultural perspectives in education. You’ll complete one semester of supervised student teaching in a bilingual education setting in New York City schools. Mentor teachers and NYU faculty will offer feedback and guidance as you develop your teaching style and techniques.
Careers and Outcomes
Your program of study will prepare you for a multitude of career opportunities, including teacher, researcher, curriculum developer, or administrator in schools, community organizations, international agencies, publishing companies, and multinational corporations.
Optional Bilingual Extension
If you hold or are eligible for New York State initial teaching certification, you'll have the option of pursuing a 15-credit bilingual extension program that leads to eligibility for the New York State Bilingual Extension. The extension program includes courses in linguistics, culture, bilingual and second language pedagogy, and language through content. See the curriculum for the extension program.
